Hello my Swedish friends. I am long time Finnish gold miner from Lemmenjoki and nowdays i occasionally do some youtube videos. I've been monitoring traffic from this forum to my youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/Jomsatube/featured (https://www.youtube.com/c/Jomsatube/featured) and i've been bit surprised by the continued traffic. I am guessing it is mostly because my neighbouring miners such as Hannu & co... but i thought that why not to hop i här to discuss a little bit about stuff, as Finnish forums are quite quiet.
My Swedish language is very poor (though just last winter went throu basics course at local Uni), but what i've gathered with google translate discussions seem to go around all sorts of topics here so i'll try to see what i can learn from here. Also do check out my YT channel. There will be new content coming occasionally (actually today at 17:00 Finnish time) will be the last part of my Kaarreoja mining stuff from past summer. I'll try to remember post on this thread once it is out.
But yeah, hope to see loads of interesting discussions. And big HI from me.
And here is the vid as promised : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqB9fGAGp_0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqB9fGAGp_0)
Welcome :)
Hi Jomsa and welcome! It's nice to see you here, we have been following your adventures for a while now. It's nice that you make videos in english, because most of us can't understand much finnish beyond kippis and kiitos :-[
I just finished watching today's episode of your Lemmenjoki mining. Kaarreoja is a strange place for gold, it isn't always where you expect it to be. This summer I was prospecting a lot of places on our claim just north of you, but it is so hard to find a new paystreak. Even where there's nice bedrock it can be totally empty. Where are the 200 gram nuggets hiding?? :))
The reddish concrete material you talked about is familiar to me, we have some of it in the lower part of the claim near the creek. The gold that comes out of it is also stained red, it seems like there has been a lot of pyrite or something in the soil that made it rust. That's my theory for why it is so hard, and has that colour. But it's difficult digging, and if you have clumps they just wash out of the sluice so you really need to smash it :-\
I can't wait to get back there and start digging again. This summer I had to leave just after finding some nice gold in my pit near Isola, so next year will be very exciting ;D Hope to meet you up there then, I think I missed you by 2-3 days this time.
Enjoy your stay here on guldforum!
Cool. Its a real drag choosing between the language for the films as i am fully aware that its almost clear 50/50 split in the viewers between Finnish speaking and people from all over the world.
Yeah the red stuff is mushed up bedrock i think and the clay (if any) is somesort of accretion... conglomerate materia. The clay is so puzzling that i cant really figure it out.
I am trying to arrange a very very long vacations off from work so i get to mine for a long time. I am also trying to setup few new expeditions and of course i am going to keep up on helping my cousin set him up with his new claim.
Learned a lot this summer and trying to see if i can improve my video and mining gear... But need to find some capital for all of it.
It's really nice living up there for several weeks, hope you can get the time off for next season. I'm jealous of your cabin, we have to live in tents and it's not always the most comfortable living :))
Speaking of the bedrock, I keep getting surprised by how "flat" and nice your bedrock is. Just 200 meters north where we have been digging, the bedrock is made up of loose flat plates with dissolved bedrock between them. It is very hard to just take off the paydirt on top and stop there, because the plates fall off and make new holes. And all the plates are sticking up at an angle, so if you want a flat floor in the pit you need to fill it with something.
Is the bedrock solid and without plates where you dig? Or do you cover the floor with some dirt to make it smooth?
I have the slates too. But they come and go in phases. Say you got line where you got coarse slate bedrock slabs like the ones you describe and then right next to it you can have the very crushed and smooth bedrock. So its not homogenous. Next time you are around, check the flood creek coming down in the lower part of my claim (near your site) the bottom of that creek is those slabs and they are hard going, but some of the best gold i've found ever was in those slabs. Actually it was those slabs which were glued together by clay. Almost like a brick wall like configuration. The smooth bedrock has been puzzling me too a bit, but i have done now 2 test sluicings of it and there does not seem to be any gold in it. I suppose i could try breaking through it. But who knows if there is 30cm or 30m of the stuff.

Yep. Tiedän sen nyt. Edellään kurja fiilis, etten jotenki tajunnu sitä ennenkuin vähän jälkijunassa. Jälleen yksi syy miksi alkoholi ei sovi erämaahan. Mehän olimme pikku krapuloissa siinä aamusella. Onneksi kaikki meni hyvin.
Yeah, i know it now. Still feeling bit bad that i did not figure it out earlier. Once again reminder why alcohol in should not be in the wilderness. We were in a bit of a hangover situtation during that morning. Luckily it all went fine.
Yo my latest video hit the youtube few hours ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BP2r8-3QVM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BP2r8-3QVM) ... we go check out my cousins new claimsite and photograph the damage done be previous unknown miners to appease mining authorities. It is subtitled but spoken language is Finnish so hold on to your ears.
Very nice adventure and great job on the subtitles, thanks for bringing us along on the adventure! It looks like an interesting area but like always the gold doesn't come easy. Do you know if there has been any large hippus found in that area?
I laughed when you called it the 10 skull difficulty area. That's how hard I feel Lemmenjoki is when you don't have a friend with an ATV to drive you to the claim... :-X Speaking of which, did you ever walk from Kaarreoja to Njurgalahti? I did it last summer with a light backpack, it "only" took me 13 hours... :P
The whole Naruska and Tuntsa area are shrouded in mystery. I have heard of rumors about some 13g nugget.. but its all very shady. And as for walking from Kaarreoja to Njurgulahti.. nope never done it. And propably will never do it as i've got older i've got a lot ... lets say.. wealthier by the plate, if you know what i mean. Hiking from the hamina to the claim (10,5km) is an extremely tough job for me as i have all this extra luggage to carry around (the negative side of owning ATV for 10 years before).
Oh yeah and for the Naruska skull level rating. It is mostly due to two factors. The ground there is challenging as it feels extremely deep and the stones are just crazy. Logistics are easy as you can just drive next to most places and walk just few K's.
Good to hear the subtitling is hopefully worth the effort. Its a slow process though.

Reviewing the past year and few words about next year. Was released yesterday, but took some time to subtitle it.
Hi my Swedish friends. Hope the new year is treating you better than last year (i hope that for everyone really)... Next monday i will be kicking of this year with new flic laying out the plans for this year, as far as i can.. and couple of new interesting news also trickled in there. Stay tuned (premiers on monday 18:00 Finnish time):

Very interesting video, it looks like 2021 will be a good year 8)
It's great to hear that Tukes is reaching out to you to make that guide. The language has been the biggest barrier for many of us Swedish diggers, so if they hire you to make more guides it would really help us a lot :D
We have been discussing the dry land dredge here on the forum too. Please update us on what you find out regarding legality and limitations. I believe the conclusion has been that if it doesn't affect the creek water, and is only used in a hole, it should be fine?
As for this years digging, it will be really interesting to see what you will find. Do you know how far the old timers dug into the side of the creek? Down in Petronella it seems like they didn't go very far from the water. Hopefully you have a nice strip of untouched ground on your claim too.
In my pit, I have the same issue with groundwater as you will have in the lower section. I just bought a submersible electric pump, and it will be really interesting to see what is hidden down there. Without the pump or a dredge it is impossible to reach the bottom, but it is looking really good C:-)
Maybe this year lower Kaarreoja will produce a nice nugget for the hippulista? Let's do our best! O:-)
Old timer seem to have dug around 5 - 8m wide swathe around the creek itself, but did not get very deep. I've managed to find twice virgin ground at the bottom. I think my area was just too damn hard for the old timers without pumps so they did very minimal digging there.
Yeah the whole TUKES thing caught me with a surprise. It sure will be interesting to do that stuff. The raporting tool video from TUKES will be out in few weeks and then i can start askin Pasi about the next one.
Yeah the language is a hassle. By metrics most of the channels viewers are older generation Finns and thus are not too well versed in English. But i am getting constantly increasing trafic from all over the world, so.. it is really hard to balance.
Yeah the dredging is a bit complicated matter. I hear also from LKL that they or someone over there is also asking about it from official govermental ... people. We need a clear answer because as you might allready know. Gold panners seem to have a habit to end up in court even with minor causes. So need to be really careful about this. Word of Pasi is not enought as it is not his place to say about it i think. As it is ELY (NTM-centralernas) bussnies to think about that stuff.
So yeah, lets try to hit the nugget charts. I think we have fair chance at it, because after all Kaarreoja has been known to produce few proper big nuggets. Alteast 3 of them i think.

As you know we discussed this already but for the others. Pasi told me explicitly it's ok as long as you are on land and are not affecting the creek, basically you are digging just as normal just with another tool.

Yes but it is not Pasi who is the governmental official who has the say in this. So his opinion is not that valid. And as we speak i just got a message from ELY (https://www.ely-keskus.fi/) from a guy who has some say in this (Rauhala Jouni) .. And i have been exchanging e-mails with him for past month, and finally he send me huge email discussing about the dredging. And i showed him in the latest message this video :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGcjMEDGJhw
and he said it will "MOST LIKELY require water permits" (eg. machine mining permissions). However the reply was long as F... i'll try to read it thru today with though and see if there are any loopholes.
However. I beg any of those who are thinking about this dry land dredging. Please be careful. We do not want to anger the lawman and get yet another shit storm like 2005 or 2009. :) Especially in Lemmenjoki as the whole future of the place seems to hang by the thread at this time.
But yeah, i'll keep digging as i still have optimistic feeling that there is loophole as there seemed to be some keywords in Rauhala's message that might be what we need to focus on.

If he thinks that type of equipment would require a water permit then nearly every single high banker would need one. Sure the one you showed him is a bigger type and uses a bit more water but it still won't affect the water level or anything like that in a creek.. that's just dumb.
Show him this one too as most will not be using anything much bigger than this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAiRV1EpP3Q

And now you hit the nail in the head directly. This was also something Jouni expressed some concerns in. He said that even current hand mines are operating at the limits of what water may be pulled from the creeks. There is no real number on it, but he thought it is probably around 300l/min. So yeah. As i said i'll read it thru and make some sort of outline out of it and try to decode bit the law on it a bit (as he nicely linked in the law arguments also so i can check them).

Great, would love to read it. And even if you took up 1000L per minute it would be nothing from even a quite small creek. It would have no impact what so ever as the water is also running back into the creek again in most cases after it's settled in the settling pond.

Btw, to my understanding, the machine permit has nothing to do with how much water you use but how much material you process?
Yeah just realized that Jouni speaks of two differend permits. Water and... environment? Perhaps the latter is the machine mining thingy.

To me when i spoke to pasi we only need one permit for machines, no water permit as i understood it, it's the same permit to my understanding but i might be wrong.
This is something a guide could be very good for btw. Permit process and what permits are needed and costs, then also guides on permits needed for building stuff on the claim etc if one wants to do that..
Only thing i know about that is to never mention you are building a sauna but a washing up place :D

Hope i got that right on the google translate. There are links to bunch of law texts? I also got some additional info.. well will get some additional info on some guy who has gone thru this process allready so i'll wait that also and try to figure it out all before submitting my own version to ELY.
Okay i've skimmed thru most of the documents given to me and.. i can say now few things that i think ... like are the key things here. Now do remember that these are NOT OFFICIAL things, but are things that seemed to come up over and over again.
So these are MY INTERPRETATIONS!Also this is just for the legality of non-machine mine permitted hand operated placer mines. So if you got permits for Excavators, dont worry, just blast away according to the permit you have.
- First of all, pumping capacity should be kept well below 1000l/min. Ideally around 500l/min as it is the closely related to classic hand operated sluicing operations.
- Do not operate in flowing water (creeks, brooks, rivers, lakes any of it), and try to stay away from any flowing water as much as possible. Also recycling the dredging water IS strongly recommended. Note: It is still bit of an question as to "how far from" the flowing water.
- No additional changes to land reclamation seem to exist, so just do the same stuff as for hand operated sluicing for reclamation
- It is strongly RECOMENDED to request FREE preview from ELY on your planned operation. However the paper even if they greenlight you, it is not AN PERMIT, but an approval of your plan. Should you deviate from your plan, you could be in trouble should inspection be done on your claim (and i guess even requesting such paper will call some attention to your operation)
- For Lemmenjoki area, the ELY review will also ask the opinion of MH (Ministry of Forestry), so ... yeah, keep that in mind
So anyway, i submitted a long long very detailed plan for ELY reviewal. Magnus here on the forums knows a bit about it all ready, but yeah. I detailed the area of operations and planned equipment, cubic meters per summer, water cleaning, etc. Almost every last bit of detail. Now i am just waiting for their reply. I assume it could take months.
Depending on what the permit entails, i might make a vid for JomsaTube - ( https://www.youtube.com/c/jomsatube ) about it also... You guys think it would be interesting?

Very interesting and you keep up the good work in this matter👍👍
So you're applying for permission to use the dry-land dredge on your claim? Or am I understanding it wrong? It will be interesting to see what they say, a video would be great! It's always great to see an actual case, with the whole process and outcome included.
I read the whole water law recently but it's really hard to know which parts actually apply to gold mining. And what is "irrelevant impact" on a stream anyway ::)

But i am asking them to review my use case for it's legality. I suspect it will be a ... somewhat tighter thing since we are talking about Lemmenjoki and the national park here. I really dont want to mess with the lawmen again. Had enough of them.
Here is finally the video made in co-operation with TUKES : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38_2SageDtg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38_2SageDtg)
On the video i go thru the process of making a annual reporting about mining for Tukes. As for now i am not sure how do people from abroad authenticate to it though. (asked Pasi, he said there will be an option for it) ... So yeah. Enjoy! And remember to like'n'sub so i know if it's panning out or not :D
Har inte kållat om gamla sättet att rapportera finns kvar, men håppas på det, därför att få i Sverige har finska bankinloggnings möjligheter.

It is in Finnish, though but should be quite simple.
ELY has responded to my inquiry. Long story short, they approved my plan, but there was some stipulations. Like Cannot dredge closer than 5m of the creek itself. Silt tailings must be stored outside of flood zones. And couple of other minor things. Might want to do a video out of this at somepoint.
So i guess it is off to find the money to invest into dredging now... (capacity was also specified... undirectly to 500l/min - 700l/min Max) ...
Again! Remember that these only apply to my own made specifications of mining, and Might not apply to yours.
Sounds great, must investigate my situation ;)
That is great news! They replied quite quickly too, good service. Did they include any special conditions from Metsä Halitus since it's in Lemmenjoki?
This season will be very exciting at Kaarreoja 8) Looking forward to seeing your build, go get that money.. ;D

Interestingly no. There was nothing on MH. Maybe its still on its way?
Dont know i fi can afford to get the gear for this summer. I'll try, but i am in bit of pinch with cash atm.

Allright. So a little bit about my thoughts on machines on hand operated claims.
Nice video, I think you make a very good point in that the guy shoveling is usually the real bottleneck for the operation. Many people invest too much in equipment when they don't have the strength to feed it :)) But it's also a part of the hobby I guess, you see some nice machine and you want it too ...
One thing I think you missed with the trommel is the impact of clay in your paydirt. For loose gravels and sand, any sluice can do the job, but if there's a lot of clay on the stones I think a trommel can make a significant improvement. A regular sluice just isn't violent enough to clean the clay off the rocks, in my experience...
Have you had any problems with clay at your claim? Down at our place, around the "trap stones" at the bottom, there's a layer of very sticky clay on all the rocks. We've been examining and panning them separately to check, and they have gold stuck to them. @Hannu made a nice trommel, and it cleans those rocks very well, even the large flat ones.
How about a trommel that isn't mounted so high above ground? I'm liking this idea myself... O:-)

There is only one way to get rid of that sticky clay and that's manuel scrubbing there will always be some clay left when you use trommels or shaker deck but if you can live with some clay left and process more material then it maybe worth it. In my case it's time that stops me using just traditional methods but if I had some more time let's say 2 month then maybe I would just use traditional sluice and manuell scrubbing.....but even if you choose the right method and not finding good pay streak, well you know what I mean....

I guess the clay could be one good reason for trommels, but then again, i am not sure is it still worth it, unless all of your stones are clay covered. At my mine, sure we have had the clay problem. Specially during last few years at the Shitvalley cut (no really, its what we call it because the outhouse is there) . However that clay is so tough i dont think 1-2m of trommel will be able to clean it. We had to use spades and hands to scrape it when we remember. Since we tried scraping bunch of stones to gold pan and panned it, and found nothing so wont be scraping in future.

Not sure about the time point. In my experience it did not speed up the process. Well maybe if you have loose easily feedable ground, maybe then.
Paskalaaksoon! :)) Not the most charming name for a pit, huh :)) :)) Better be careful which "golden nuggets" you dig for there >:D
You're right @Grävmaskinisten (https://www.guldforum.se/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2388) , if there's not a good paystreak it doesn't matter how much work you do. Like looking in the pan for more gold, after you finish panning the concentrate. But I think the trommel or shaker deck with rocks grinding against eachother will liberate a lot more gold than just the rocks tumbling in the sluice. Again it's the problem of feeding the machine enough for its capacity.
I don't know how much clay there will be at the bottom of my pit this year. If the yellow water is any indication, it will be sticky. But there's good gold in the "peasoup" too 8)
Speaking of machine-assisted digging, maybe you can make a followup video on land dredging vs traditional sluice after this season @jomsa (https://www.guldforum.se/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4205) C:-)

Yes. Paskalaakso, well actuall i said wrong.. should be Shitgully... Paskakuru. And yeah dont want to dig too close to the shithouse.
But yeah, if i get the dredging stuff sorted out this season, it is a vid i will most likely do. Which actually reminds me. If some one knows of any good dry dredging nozzles for sale. Around 3" size.. PM me.

I'm no expert in dredges but you'll need 2 pipes from the pressure hose for a dry land dredge. One forwards to flush water into your dredge hole and one backwards to create suction, with an adjustable flow for the forward one.
Check the hydro force design:

Otherwise you'll just have a regular dredge nozzle but then you'll run out of water since you're not dredging inside the creek...

What do you think about the finnish square rubber mats by the way? Some of us swedish miners really like those.

Well first of all, they were not supposed to make the expamet stuff there. So cant really comment on that. I was supposed to make my own special holder there at Uni metalshop, but i guess i'll use that.
Secondly, the square holed rubber mat, i myself use it randomly only for exploratory stuff as it is easy to spot gold on. But i've heard and seen myself, that gold tends to jump out of it occasionally. So it should be used only for screening, not for final resting place for gold.
I mean the deep Kulta Jussi mats, not the car boot type:

These hold gold very well, even with high water flow. The only downside is you need to have exactly 20 cm ränni for them.

And when does this happen with properly set up hand fed sluice? :D
Yeah it's an unconventional design but the vortex in the square is very good. We have discussed the square design a little here in regards to 3d-printing sluices. They never get full, the only way they could get full is if you have way too little water in the sluice I guess :-\
But anyway, it's great to see your sluice getting ready. It's going to catch some very nice gold this summer 8) Will you be using the green carpet from your old sluice in the upper half of it?
Don't forget to look for korundi, there's a lot of nice stones at Kaarreoja O:-) With all those riffles at the end you will catch a lot of interesting minerals, just need to sieve and look at them in good sunlight to find the goodies C:-)

The new sluices are 50mm wider than the old ones. So not possible to use the old green carpet. I'll be making new one, and if i manage to fix that expamet i'll try on some spaghetti i got stashed away. Just to see how it works.

Yeah i've found bunch of gemstones during the years. It is one of the reasons i wanted more riffle area for the sluice so i have slightly increased chance to catch garnets and corundums.
Here's a big corundum I found last season:
[mmg]1208[/mmg]
It's a bit hard to see from the image but it has both pink and greyish-blue areas, most of the stone is grey unfortunately. There's both pink rubies and sky blue sapphires if you're lucky O:-) Still hoping to find some big ones with good colour...
Here is bunch of the ones i've found. I have another picture somewher where there is even more of them, cant find it now though.
Wow, you're killing me with those, the red and purple ones are soooo beautiful! :o :o :o How big are they roughly? Thank goodness there's someone else on Kaarreoja who looks for these wonderful treasures O:-) The crystal with a side crystal on it is really cool too :o

Part of professional pride of gold miner is to know a bit about gemstones and to have an eye that can spot them. So i have something like two dozen of these. Largest is like.. hmm. I'd say 30mm .. smallesta and most of them are tiny like 8 - 15mm and very broken.

Everything looks so different when it's covered by snow ... But I think I can see my pit (or rock tailings pile at least) in the video just after you crossed Kaarreoja by Isola 8)

Yeah i met Pekka and Ulla as i mentioned on the film. Few Reindeer herders also visited me (my little cousin and one another villager) ... then yeah it was Kanamäki and his crew transporting scrap around your claim. I chatted Kanamäki a bit while passing by.
So... i released a new video. Subject is about making a new gold mining permit application. However the subject matter is somewhat... complicated and i did not yet have the time to make subtitles as it is complicated text. What do you guys think, would subtitled version be of any help?

So thats 2003 - 2009 years of my stuff at Kaarreoja crushed into one single huge chunk.
That's a lovely video, so many memories must be coming back from seeing those pictures. It was really nice to see Kaarreoja at all different seasons! Kanamäki had told us that Kaarreoja could flood spectacularly, but I had a hard time imagining what it would look like. How strange that the water just flushes from the entire hillside like that.
I found the information about gold coming from Rossinoja exciting. There's a high bench deposit at Petronellan Kolmio that I am even more curious about exploring now... ;D Looking at the shaded terrain map there are so many old channels at your cabin elevation and even higher. I think that's the explanation for the gold high above the creek. Maybe the richest ground is yet to be found?
Keep the great videos coming :)

Yeah the western hillside is full of surprises. The DEM model i made myself on the area also revealed... interesting tidbits.. not sure i am ready to share them really... or really the point would be lost as they are mostly related to our claim.
Have to see about the vid's for future. Only so much i i can do.
He he, you can share your insights, I will only dig up the gold that's on our side of the border :)) :)) In all seriousness though, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a nice high deposit there just waiting to be found. So wanted to metal detect a old reindeer herding site, a Kaarre, of which is the namesake of Kaarreoja ... ofcourse it being in the national park, had to keep digging to nil... but still managed to find some relics from the past :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5CmtEz52kE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5CmtEz52kE) ... show must go on? Had bit of hard time with the megapit.
Dang, I had expected much more gold than that from the megapit :( But the water is really difficult to deal with, especially with bad weather... I had a similar season where I had to give up before reaching the bottom in my pit. At some point you just can't fight the water without pumping more, and the pit starts collapsing from the sides when the water rises again.
But don't give up, the bottom might be the richest paydirt you have ever seen - it was that way for me. I hope you can come back with a bigger pump for the pit and get to the bottom next year :D When you get 30+ specks from a few scoops of dirt, not even half a pan, you know you are at the good level ... 8)
Meanwhile, it will be very exciting to see what you find in the last few days of the season. Those upper benches intrigue me a lot ^-^ Have you done any testholes at all even higher up on the hill? I see your claim has a lot of land even higher than the ATV track etc.
The search goes on, but I hope you and Mr. Majaniemi get some nice gold on the last days at the claim 2021 C:-) Oh by the way, did you film your prospecting trip to the weird high deposits on Vasarova?

But don't give up, the bottom might be the richest paydirt you have ever seen - it was that way for me. I hope you can come back with a bigger pump for the pit and get to the bottom next year :D When you get 30+ specks from a few scoops of dirt, not even half a pan, you know you are at the good level ... 8)
Yeah i was expecting also more, but then again it was very very deep ground. The pump actually could keep up with the water no problem, but the issue was that every time it starts to rain we had to stop in fear of generator shorting out. I will return to the megapit with dredge once i get it however. But in the past i've dug my share of empty pits so ... yeah you just move on and keep digging. :)

Meanwhile, it will be very exciting to see what you find in the last few days of the season. Those upper benches intrigue me a lot ^-^ Have you done any testholes at all even higher up on the hill? I see your claim has a lot of land even higher than the ATV track etc.
I've done some test holes pretty far up to the hill and there is signs of gold pretty far high above the ATV track pits. Never done any testing on the upper part of Rossinoja though.

The search goes on, but I hope you and Mr. Majaniemi get some nice gold on the last days at the claim 2021 C:-) Oh by the way, did you film your prospecting trip to the weird high deposits on Vasarova?
If you are talking about those strange gravel bars way high up in vasarova. No i did not test them from gold. I just found them to be very curious and maybe some day worth investigating as they are bit strange.
Time to wrap things up at Kaarreoja for summer 2021... The last episode, check it out and if you have not done so, do consider subscribing to the channel!

Thank you for the videos! You have really struggled with the claim over the last year's.. 1gr now is really testing the determination. How many days did you dig this year?

Err i'd say must have been close to 20 or so days. We spent i think 3 days digging that channel, 2 siesta days because it was so hot. So yeah. Dont have exact count, but i'd say 20 - 25 days
So the channel managed to past 500 subs. Never i really expected even 100 let alone 500. So i had to make this bit of a celebratory vid where i talk a little bit about past summer, and reveal what is up next... More Naruska, a Lot more. Starting January 1 (date subject to change).
Also thanks to my swedish Subs i know you are there (also know there are many many viewers who have not yet subbed, please do, every sub helps)... Anyway i'll stop the shameless plug now... and here is the video :

So yeah remade the how to get prospecting in finland piece into much shorter video, might be of some use to someone :

So we made a quick and simple sluicebox for my friends Naruska claim.
Kultakuume on aika kova tähän vuoden aikaan. Hyvä video jäin kaipaamaan miltä lopputulos näyttää. Tuleehan siittä video?.
Tolkining. Guldfebern är rätt hög vid denna årstid. Bra video. Saknade att se färdig resultat av rännan. Det kommer väl video av det?
English. Good video. Goldfever is High in this time over the year. I miss To see video of the final of sluice. Hope you show some video of that
Javist, Tulee vielä videota missä näemme rännin toiminnassakin. Parin viikon päästä lähtee käyntiin Naruskan seikkailut
Sure, There will be videos where you can see the sluice in action. In few weeks of time Naruska expedition films start rolling out and we'll see it in action there.
Has jomsa gold fever in High level now in this time of winter ? :))

You bet... Trying to get all the equipment thing sorted out.. sorting out the dredging system feverishly... No new on it yet though.
I'm thinking, why do you not built like Hannus unic High banker?. Good and easy stone washing and no big Stones Flow down to the mats...
Not sure what kind of highbanker Hannu uses, but i suspect it has some form of grille in the top?
We usually try to stay away from the grilles and keep the sluice size large so we can ram volume into them. The more dirt we can push thru the bigger the gold catch. Sure we might lose a flake or two but i think it pays back in the time we did not spent washing empty rocks.
This. Hannus " unic automatic" High banker

Oh yeah, i've been thinking of similar concept but not yet made an design for it. Its a cool idea.

But with the finish type, ie similar to the one you built in the video you can't ram volume into it, it's not wide enough. Take mine for example.. sure it's a bit oversized but I have the biggest gold hog.. i can run 8 ton's an hour through it if I wanted. And this is the one thing I don't understand with the finish type of sluices.. why so thin? If they where just double the width you could run so much more material through it. And also the grille is what makes you able to wash stuff faster as it removes the bigger rocks.
Well i guess it is by tradition, still not sure about the shininess as it was in consideration with my 200mm steel sluices. For those i got suggestion from A. Peronius to make 200mm ones so went with that. Also for us the reason was mostly the fact that we had 150mm riffling on hand all ready so managed to cut costs by not making new riffling by just using some old ones i had left over.
edit: Actually now that i think.. it is most likely because costs. That single sheet of plywood cost propably only tens of euros.

Do you have super hog, Gold hog says that it can swallow 3-6 tons an hour not 8 ton?
Here is my grille :)) in mäkärä, family size 😄. Sluice is 300mm
Those hogs cost tons of money. I'd say that is the main reason we use simple 3 timber boards nailed together solutions mostly. Dont cost a thing ;D
Iller can you get a picture here, from your High banker?. Im now intressed on High bankers now. Becouse i'm changing gold Mark to this summer. And it is traditionally stone Mark. Not like mäkärä.
Jomsa. I think if bigger stones pull out flakes from upper mats in sluice. You V-form Matt in the end Will take it. It is very good V- Matt idea. But wat is your idea on the V-matt?

Well we wanted to run a test to see what would happen if we would drop water preasure way way down at the end of the sluice to catch those last few fines that manage to get past riffles and the fake grass mat. It worked nicely (as you will see in the future videos kinda) ... it catches loads of black sand, and some random tiny specs of gold, but as the fake grass yet again proved to be so effective that not much escaped the sluice.
How big Stones did you run over the mats?

How big Stones did you run over the mats?
We have a "rule of fist" .. .so basicly everything that is smaller than fist we put into the box. Well maybe half a fist would be more accurate.
I can't wait long time to see videos of the action. Then do you think it's coming out? C:-)

My channel runs on biweekly publishing schedule so next one should be out 15.1 ... which will the video that kicks of the 10+ episode Naruska serie which will run far into summer.
In this week i meet one gold digger Man. He's old friend (75year ), he had said to him like this.- If i was now in better condition, i go to naruska and digging there. Becouse then he was younger he get good gold there.

No problem with using wood for the sluice, it's more the width of the finish ones I don't understand why to make them so thin, wider = processing a lot more material.

Here you go http://www.bighighbanker.com/
They also have quite a few videos on youtube also
Iller, have you test it in finland?. Wat cost it about?
Isn't it also a question about the water needed? Narrow ränni saves water! Some old ones only use natural waterflow from streams. And normal people only have the muscles to dig small amounts of gravel/hour.. But for us city people it becomes a stress of limited holiday and for some its a competition "Who gets more toys before they die"! ⌛
Okay this is starting to sound something i need to sort out next summer.... Maybe see if i can get sponsored review on one of those fancy gold hog sluices... take it to say Naruska next yer and see how it works. Could be good for all i know.. never just felt the need to buy one since it is so easy and so cheap to make plywood one yourself.
I think you can built High banker box in plywood. High banker box and sluice in play wood C:-).
Oh yeah... one thing to note. I remember that Peronius said that 150mm - 200mm long tom can process about 20m3 of dirt in an hour. So ... yeah. I believe by showel we can never reach that neither with Long tom nor Highbanker. The capacities are just so high.
But Janne raised a good point, the long tom is far more robust. It does not care as much about the angle it is set and also i believe it can handle more rocks as the water can be deeper with same amount of pumping power.
But this discussion is getting kinda out of hand.... might need whole new topic for it. :D

Iller, have you test it in finland?. Wat cost it about?
Yep, it works great but it does cost but will last me many many years, I think with toll and vat I paid 28k for it but I suspect it to last for at least 10 years.
Ok. I'm planning to built own box on my old 300mm sluice to this summer.

Very exciting stuff, it's fascinating to see how the river gravels are pushed up against the bedrock in your pit while there's that broken bedrock on top of everything. Hope to see more from that trip next week ;D
Aye, it was quite a surprised. Had not seen such an clear seperation of materials next to each other.
You'll have to wait for the finale of this 3 day trip however till 13.2.
More from Naruska. Checking out new possible claim site (funnily it is not exactly Rautakuru, though it is seen also here briefly)

Once more we went to Naruska to explore new place called Irongulch (Rautakuru in Finnish) to see if it golds gold and sure it did. Ended up claiming the area for more detailed examination.
Great to see some footage from Rautakuru, hope you get your permit this summer C:-)
Thanks for filming so much, you are a true role model for us slackers who go digging without filming... Keep up the good work <3 We love coming along for the ride 8) 2022 is going to be awesome!!

Thanks,
Permits came thru for Rautakuru so we're golden on that front. Next thing is to just produce some real visible proper gold out of it. Meanwhile... here is something else :
Bit about the upcoming summer:
And bit more blasts from the past:
So mining starts at Rautakuru as does season 2022 for me :
Finally managed to log back in here. So here is bunch of vids from past summer, enjoy:
We keep prospecting our new claim
Pulling some big stones out of the ground
Did not bother with gold panning competitions
Got a simple sluicebox setup sponsored to me for testing
Started sluicing at Naruska finally
Sluicing continues at Naruska
yeah quite a many.. but i hope you enjoy.
Lets get Lemmenjoki 2022 gold mining started:
And lets also start fiddling around with dredging stuff:
What is says on the tin... we start experimenting and learning how to use this dredge thing i've had made.
UPDATE: So turns out Youtube had messed up the subtitles on the launch of previous video. Subtitles were fixed this morning, so if you had any issues with them, try again now.
New goofind out video out... this time with working subtitles i hope.
Here we go again... This time panning some gold at Lemmenjoki but also at Naruska.
Moar gold from the bedrock of Kaarreoja
LKL (Finnish Gold Panning association) held a small Xmas party At Oulu, here is my trip video about that :
So took trip down the memory lane and went back to year: 2010
But if that is not your thing, there is also some new stuff from summer 2022:
Well plenty of new vids here for you all come and see:
Some action from Lemmenjoki, Summer 2022And some from NaruskaAnd then some winter stuff from this spring
So visited the European Championships for Gold panning at Tankavaara :
Bit of a tasting what is to come this winter out of tube:
