Titel: Hematite?
Skrivet av: Aquatek69 skrivet 17 december, 2014, 09:11:14
Hi,
I think this is Hematite but just want a second opinion, it's heavy & magnets stick to it strongly. It's not Magnetite as it will not pick up pins etc but it has a metalic lustre & what looks like strange pressure marks....
It was in a pile of tailings from an old järn mine so i'm thinking Hematite...

Any ideas are welcome.
Cheers,
John.

Most likely magnetite as the iron in your sample is attracted by a magnet.

Ok, thanks for that, i thought that Magnetite actually acted as a magnet so could pick up metal, this piece does not act as a magnet at all & paper clips etc just slide off it as if it was plastic but if I throw fridge magnets at it they stick easily  :D

Cheers,
John.

No, Magnetite dont behave like a magnet. it is just magnetic. So you have magnetite.

As privous person alredy said.

The main charactaristics of a hematite is if you scrape it across a piece of unpolished ceramic.

if the stone leaves a tray of brown/reddish it is very likely a hematite

Hematite actually leaves a reddish streak on a unglazed piece of porcelain.

But as the others said, magnetite.
